As there been tremendous increase in the miniaturization of the transistors, thereby improving the computation speeds rapidly. Recently researchers of Intel have produced a transistor of dimensions 80 by 3 atoms wide and thick. This is said to be constructed with the same equipment that was used to build the current chips such as Pentium 3 and 4. This transistor can be switched on and off 1.5 trillion times a second. Thus it will be possible to build chips with speed of 20 GHz.
The P4 contains 42 million transistors and uses 0.18 micron manufacturing process. While the new technology will use 0.045 micron process and allow up to 1 billion transistors on the 20 GHz chip.Clock ticks on and on, let's see what's next.
